Former White House communications director Hope Hicks continues to enjoy the support of the Republican Party even with her departure from the White House with the party paying for her legal fees, forking over almost $500,000 in legal fees for Trump’s loyal and longtime aide.
Not only is the party paying for Trump’s own legal defense expenses, but also for the lawyers of Trump’s staff involved in various controversies and cases.
For one, the RNC paid $451,780 to Trout Cacheris & Janis. Hicks hired Robert Trout in September 2017. Data and report from the Federal Election Commission also show that Trout continued to be paid for over six months. Payment for Trout and his team adds to the mounting legal fees associated with the investigations by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and several congressional committees of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.
There are three lawyers in Trout’s firm that represent people being investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller.
The mounting legal fees for the Trump Team that includes Hicks are prompting some party officials to consider putting up a separate legal defense fund last year. The RNC decided in the end, however, to use the party financial muscle to shoulder the said staggering legal fees.
The RNC has been boasting of out-raising their DNC counterparts for several financial quarters, which is a feat by itself. It’s just that their competitors do not have the liability they have at the moment in terms of legal expenses.
