Germany, as the largest country in Europe, does not have royalty of its own, hence any coverage of a royal wedding of a European monarch is sure to be a hit on its TV, certainly with a rural population where gossip magazines are still sold in the hundreds of thousands.

Just as any other European TV station, the national German broadcaster ZDF prepared for a show of several hours, but afterward it’s somewhat older presenters were rounded on social media for their ‘racist’ commentary.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">🇩🇪 German public broadcaster ZDF was heavily criticized on Saturday for its sometimes questionable coverage of the royal wedding.<br> <br>Social media users and news commentators found its coverage revealed deep-set racism among German media. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/RoyalWedding?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#RoyalWedding</a> <a href="https://t.co/MqCoFi1J4c">https://t.co/MqCoFi1J4c</a></p>&mdash; Keith Walker (@KeithWalkerNews) <a href="https://twitter.com/KeithWalkerNews/status/998081535210385408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 20, 2018</a></blockquote>

Phrases as "Die Queen drückt bei Meghan ein Auge zu" indicating ‘the Queen is ‘allowing’ Meghan despite…’ or referring to the public on one side of the church as ‘exotic’ were not very well received.

Hereunder the examples of commentary that caused the German social media commenters to react:

- "Meghan always wanted a Barbie doll family. But there were only white and black Barbie families rather than mixed-race Barbies."

- “The choir sang beautifully black songs.”

- “Are those dreadlocks on Meghan’s mother? It’s curly hair that’s been somewhat de-curled, same as Meghan does all the time.”

One of the viewers thought it was hilarious though, and proposed a drinking game for the hour-long show where you would have to have a shot every time one of the ZDF presenters stated ‘Afro-American heritage’.

<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/RoyalWedding?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#RoyalWedding</a></p>&mdash; Julia Probst (@EinAugenschmaus) <a href="https://twitter.com/EinAugenschmaus/status/997782396228571136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">19 May 2018</a></blockquote>

In a reaction afterward, broadcaster ZFD admitted that "There were some calls from viewers with questions as well as praise and criticism on various aspects of the broadcast.”
