Spain – ‘Chalet-Gate’: Extreme Left Party ‘Podemos’ Leadership Caught Buying Luxury Villa

During the financial crisis of 2007-2008, one of the European countries hardest hit was Spain. In the following years of economic hardship, many tough reforms were put in place and people saw their salaries, pensions, and benefits cut as a result. Just as in Greece and Italy, the other Mediterranean nations that had to introduce a new kind of politics, extreme left-wing political parties resulted. In Spain, it was Podemos, with its charismatic leader Pablo Iglesias.

Podemos, which means Spanish for ‘We can’, wants equal pay for all Spanish and mostly a very socialist, some say, communist, state for the Iberian peninsula. The party went from high to high during the elections of the past decade, but never took part of any actual government.

All that could now change as the Spanish press has been overwhelmed with having Mr. Iglesias on their front page for the past few days. The reason is that he and the party’s leader in Parliament, young Miss Irene Montero, have formed a couple since last year and as she is expecting their first child, the two decided to buy a house.

Not just any house though, a modern luxury villa with pool for some €660k. Knowing that the couple has engaged in a mortgage of €540k to buy this, the Spanish press calculated that they would have to pay off some €1.600 per month for the next 30 years, or three times the base salary in Spain.

You will understand that for an extreme left-wing party who pleads for similar salaries for everyone in Spain and more taxes for the rich, that does not look good.

If Iglesias and Montero lose the vote, that's it, they're out. Would Podemos survive without him? If they win the ballot, Podemos becomes the party that backs luxury homes for its leaders and inequality in its own ranks.
— Matthew Bennett (@matthewbennett) May 19, 2018

Furthermore, a clip showing Mr Iglesias stating in parliament back in 2012 that the Spanish Economy Minister, Mr. Luis de Guindus, who had just bought a similar villa at the time, was ‘the kind of scandalous politician that this country was now left with, do you really want this country ruled by someone who spends €600.000 to a luxury pad?’ is coming back to haunt the Podemos leadership. So Podemos is the second largest and third most influential party in parliament today. Unfortunately, it was created under the direct control of George Soros and his appointee French theorist Stéphane Hessel, who wrote a pompous book “Time for Outrage!”, which calls all those who are dissatisfied with the status quo to start “color revolutions”. Pablo Iglesias is one such of Soros' "rebels". Initially, the group of “rebels” was called M15 in accordance with the hyperrealist Soros’ ideas, then “Indignados” just like in Hessel’s book (Outraged), and finally it became Podemos, which means “we can.”
