Turkey – Flash Floods Wash Away 160 Cars (Video)

A flash flood which lasted just 9 minutes will have serious consequences for many car owners in the Turkish capital Ankara as they saw their cars being taken away by the instant river that was formed in the middle of the city.

According to Turkish news agencies some 160 vehicles were swept away by the heavy rains in a matter of minutes. The videos of the events indeed show great damage to all vehicles parked in the area.

4 people were taken to hospital with bruises and broken arms and legs whilst 25 business reported damage due to cars bumping into storefronts or damage from the heavy rains.

Footage posted on various social media channels shows the muddy water rushing through the city’s streets as cars are swept away like toys in a bath.

A man can be seen standing on the hood of his vehicle, clinging on desperately.

The weather forecast had foreseen heavy downpours for some 3 hours but it was all finished in a matter of minutes, leaving the Turkish capital with a lot of mud and broken cars to clean up.

The mayor of Ankara, Mr Mustafa Tuna, described the whole ordeal as "a natural disaster like never before," adding that rains like these "can only happen once in 500 years. It's unprecedented."
