Just a day after attending the funeral of his wife, Barbara, former President George H.W. Bush has been hospitalized in Houston with an infection.
Family spokesman Jim McGrath announced on Twitter that the 93-year-old Bush is “responding to treatments and appears to be recovering.”
The 41st U.S. President was admitted to Houston Medical Hospital on Sunday morning after the said infection spread to his blood.

Bush is already wheelchair-bound; and he also employs an electric scooter to move around after developing a form of Parkinson’s disease. He has been hospitalized several times in recent years for treatment for respiratory problems.
Just last year, Bush spent two weeks in the hospital for treatment of pneumonia and chronic bronchitis, a constant irritation of the lining of tubes that carry air to one’s lungs. Doctors to the former president said chronic bronchitis is a condition that is more prevalent with advanced age, and can also aggravate pneumonia symptoms.
He was also hospitalized for more than two weeks in January last year for pneumonia. He had to spend some time then in intensive care as doctors inserted a breathing tube and connected him to a ventilator.
During the public viewing of his wife’s casket on Friday, the former Republican President offered his hand to many of the nearly 2,500 people who went to pay their respects to Barbara. It is not clear if that contributed to the infection he picked up.
Barbara was 92 when she died last week. The couple has been married for a record 73 years making it the longest presidential marriage in U.S. history.
George Herbert Walker Bush served as U.S. president from 1989 to 1993. The Massachusetts-born Bush also served as congressman, CIA director and Ronald Reagan’s vice president.
First lady Melania Trump attended Barbara’s funeral where she was photographed with former U.S. presidents including the two Bush, George H.W. and George W. Bush, and the leaders’ respective first ladies.
Melania has also tweeted her well-wishes for the elder Bush’s recovery and healing.
