The Harris County deputy who shot and killed Danny Ray Thomas on March 22 has been terminated by the Sheriff's office after a recommendation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Administrative Disciplinary Committee.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said he accepted the recommendation of the disciplinary committee and fired Deputy Cameron Brewer. Brewer had been on administrative leave since the March 22 shooting. The disciplinary committee said the recommendation was based on an Internal Affairs investigation which determined that Brewer did not adhere to the Sheriff's Office use of force policy when he fatally shot Thomas.
Brewer was on patrol when he encountered an altercation between Thomas and the driver of another vehicle near the intersection of Greens Road and Imperial Valley. When Brewer reached the scene, Thomas' pants were around his ankles and he ignored Brewer's commands to get on the ground. When Thomas continued to approach the deputy, he fired a single shot killing the unarmed Thomas.

Sheriff Gonzalez said in a statement, "The brave men and women of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office are called upon to make life-or-death decisions on a daily basis, and we take that responsibility very seriously. We hold the community’s trust as sacred, and we will continue to support our deputies with clear policies and the valuable training they need to protect the lives of all our residents."
Gonzalez called the video concerning when it was initially released and said his office would be transparent during its investigation. Brewer told investigators he was in fear of his life when he opened fire and thought Thomas had something in his hand.
