According to prisons spokesman Jeff Taillon a prison riot in South Carolina has led to multiple deaths and even more requiring serious medical attention. The riots occurred at Lee Correctional Institution and began with multiple fights breaking out around 7:15pm Sunday night. State Law Enforcement Division agents had to be called in to help secure the area at 3am on Monday.
No officers were wounded during the melee, but 7 inmates are dead with 17 seriously wounded in the Bishopville maximum-security facility. The institution houses around 1,500 inmates including some of South Carolina's most violent offenders. 2015 saw two officers being stabbed at the prison and in February an inmate killed another prisoner.
