UN Security Council Meeting Leads To US-Russia Clash Over Alleged Syria Chemical Attack

Just after Russian stock markets were left reeling over newly imposed US sanctions and dropped to their lowest level in 2014 and the Russian rouble suffered its worst one-day fall in value in two years, the Kremlin’s man in the UN Security council stood firm against US envoy Ms Nikki Hayley and continued to claim (just as Russian foreign minister Lavrov had done earlier in the day, see our related coverage) that there had been ‘no chemical attack’ in Syria.

For the US, Ms Nikki Haley, with clear orders from the White House, demanded that the Security Council would take action whilst at the same time warning that the United States would go at it alone if needs be, with or without the United Nations.

Ms Haley: "We have reached the moment when the world must see justice done.”

"History will record this as the moment when the Security Council either discharged its duty or demonstrated its utter and complete failure to protect the people of Syria."

"Either way, the United States will respond."

The Russian envoy to the UN Council, Mr Vassily Nebenzia, said that Russia thinks the US will only go in one direction as from this point: "From what we hear now, I am afraid they are looking for a military option, which is very, very dangerous."

During the meeting, Mr Nebenzia stated: "There was no chemical weapons attack,"

"Through the relevant channels we already conveyed to the US that armed force under mendacious pretext against Syria where, at the request of the legitimate government of a country, Russian troops have been deployed, could lead to grave repercussions."
