German police on Monday confirmed earlier reports on social media that the person who set an apartment block alight in the town of Leipzig over the Easter weekend was a 32-year-old Syrian refugee. As a result of his actions, one person died and 17 were injured (several beloved house pets died in the fire as well).

Various videos on social media show how people got stuck on the roof of the building and had to jump down on a fire department cushion to save their lives.

Germany’s newspaper Bild stated that the man would be charged with arson and murder as he had apparently blocked several emergency exits.

Police explained that they believe the man started the fire in a nearby rubbish bin at first and then intentionally blocked both the rear and the front exit.

According to neighbor statements, local police knew the 32-year-old Syrian well as he regularly fought fiercely with his wife in the early hours of the morning, much to the dismay of the other residents of the building.
