Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano: He's Gotta Go

It is Impossible to Fix Syria With Asaad, According to Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano.

The Foreign Minister told the Senate on Wednesday that as long as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is in power, Syria will not have a positive future.

"Assad’s power as Syrian president gives impact not just on the nation’s security and stability, but also on the prospects of rebuilding the country."

"It is hard to consider period of reconstruction with a leader like Assad who kills his own people and keeps bombing another."

Six years into this brutal war that has left hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced. Robert Ford, former US ambassador to Syria from 2011 to 2014 and currently a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute said that Syria can only be rebuilt if the civil war has ended. There isn’t going to be any reconstruction in the immediate future — there’s still too much fighting going on.

Assad repeatedly uses chemical weapons against civilian’s shows that he is not particularly concerned about their economic welfare. Assad may perhaps show interest in rebuilding some of the inner cities of eastern Syria, because it is the areas of his political base; the place which serve as his political stronghold along the Mediterranean coast. But for the rest of the country, frankly, he doesn’t care that much about, and he doesn’t control it anyway and he’s not likely to control it anytime soon, Ford added.

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump said that ousting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is not a focus for the United States but the White House blame for the continuous violence on Assad.
