A recall has been issued for a packaged salad sold at Walmart after a dead bat was found inside a container.
Fresh Express issued a recall for a limited number of cases of Organic Marketside Spring Mix sold at stores in the Southeastern United States Saturday because a dead bat was found in a packaged salad in Florida.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with the FDA and the Florida Department of Health to investigate the situation. U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s recall chart notes if the body part of the bat has a risk of rabies contamination.
Officials say that two people in Florida reportedly ate the salad before the bat was found in the package. Although CDC says that the risk of rabies transmission is very low, it is not totally zero.The organization recommended the two eaters of the organic salad to be tested and start treatment as if they’d been exposed to rabies. Both were reported with good health so far.
The dead bat was sent to the CDC rabies lab to test for any diseases because bats in the United States sometimes have been found to have diseases. The bat was sent to its lab to be tested for rabies, but the animal's deteriorated condition did not allow for a conclusive test.
Consumers who may have already purchased the recalled product should discard and not consume it says Fresh Express. Customers can also return the product to the Walmart where they purchased it.
A full refund is available where it was purchased or customers can call Fresh Express Consumer Response Center toll-free at (800) 242-5472 during the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
The said recalled product comes in a five-ounce, clear container. The best-by date is April 14, 2017, and with production code G089B19. In addition to Florida, the salads were also sold to Walmart stores in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
