Georgia Mom Celebrated for Making ‘Entitled’ Son Shop at Goodwill

A Georgia mother worried that her son is exhibiting an “entitled” attitude has resorted to a unique punishment. And she has unintentionally become a social media sensation.

Cierra Brittany Forney of Hog Mountain uploaded a post on Facebook on March 25 documenting her son’s shopping visit to a local Goodwill store. The bigger story in it is that the trip to the said thrift shop was not her 13-year-old son’s idea but her own. She made him spend $20 from his own money to buy clothes to actually wear to school for a week.

Her son never really shops in Goodwill, until the said little punishment. Forney said she is kind of disciplining her son and trying to instill in him greater values because her teenage son had been “acting a little entitled.” The mom shared: “Acting like he’s too good to shop at Wal-Mart or marking snarky comments about kids at school who shop at the Goodwill. I don’t tolerate that.”

Forney also said that her son was not exactly thrilled with the shopping experience at Goodwill, and even shed tears during the trip. Nonetheless, the mom believes her little project was meant to make a “better man” out of her “entitled” young son. She also thinks that someday her son would look back at the experience and merely laugh about it.

The post became a smash hit online, liked more than 500,000 times and shared over 200,000 times on Facebook. Many social media users supported what the mother did and even praised her for her unique and bold approach to her son’s little problem with attitude.

Forney wrote in her post explaining why she made him do the ‘’challenge”: “I want to teach my kids that money isn’t everything and if you have to degrade other people because of where they shop, then you too will shop there.”

Goodwill is an American nonprofit organization that provides job training, employment opportunities, and other community-based programs for people who have “barriers” that may prevent or make it difficult for them to land jobs. Goodwill is funded by a huge network of retail thrift stores which also operate as non-profits selling clothes at low prices, among others.

Social media users cheered the mom’s move because they said the “punishment” teaches about respect and showing value for every hard-earned dollar of working parents. The said post elicited more than 122,000 comments form readers and social media users.

Well, her discipline would have been just as, if not more, effective if she hadn't made it a public spectacle. This kid will grow up hating her. Think Adam Lanza.
