NY Gov Cuomo Is “Not As Without Rhythm As Some Of Our Jewish Brothers And Sisters”

Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is under threat from within his own party. Faced with a re-election challenge from “Sex and the City” star Ms Cynthia Nixon, he probably decided it was a good time to show everyone that he also can act. And thus, during a speech in a mostly black church in Harlem over the weekend, he decided to make fun of the apparent lack of “rhythm” of “our Jewish brothers and sisters.”

Not everyone was amused though.

Stepping onto the always risky terrain of religious humour mixed in with stereotyping, Mr Cuomo addressed the congregation at Mount Neboh Baptist Church in the following manner: “I want you to know as a matter of full disclosure, I am a Catholic. Catholics basically believe the same teachings that Baptists believe.”

“We just do it without the rhythm. But we try. We are not as without rhythm as some of our Jewish brothers and sisters.”

He then took a shot at former campaign manager Mr Hank Sheinkopf, who was also present in the church and now works as an Orthodox rabbi: “I was watching Mr. Sheinkopf here in the front row moving to the music. It was ugly, I’ll tell you the truth.”

That&#39;s 2 things.” <a href="https://t.co/8xoSuEgWkC">https://t.co/8xoSuEgWkC</a></p>&mdash; ken lovett (@klnynews) <a href="https://twitter.com/klnynews/status/976770266083856384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 22, 2018</a></blockquote>

Republican Mr Arthur Schwartz noted: “The governor should focus more on governing and less on Jew jokes.”

And State Senator Mr Simcha Felder from Brooklyn, an Orthodox Jew, also thought the Governor’s words were ill advised: “I don’t think it was that good a joke. I can write better material.”

Mr Cuomo also used his speaking time before the congregation to address the city’s Housing Authority and thus indirectly attack his political nemesis, Mayor de Blasio: “They talk about the school-to-prison pipeline, where people fail in school, can’t get a job and wind up in prison.”

“It’s worse than that because it starts before school. It’s really a home-to-prison pipeline,” he added. “It starts in the neighbourhood. It starts in the housing complex. And it starts many times in public housing.”
