Rihanna’s Rant Sends Snapchat’s Stocks Falling

It’s costly to make Rihanna mad.

The pop superstar slammed Snapchat on Thursday for running an ad that mocked the assault she suffered in 2009 from her then-boyfriend Chris Brown. The enraged celebrity even suggested to her fans and followers to delete the popular app.

After Rihanna’s rant, Wall Street responded by pushing the stock in parent, Snap, Inc. down 3.6%.

Rihanna commands a strong presence online, enjoying one of the biggest following. She counts more than 86 million followers on Twitter, 81 million on Facebook and 61 million on Instagram.

The ad that Snapchat ran for the “Would You Rather” game asked Snapchat users if they would rather “Slap Rihanna or “Punch Chris Brown.”

Rihanna took to Snapchat rival Instagram to articulate her disgust for what the app in question has done to her. She wrote, obviously addressing, Snapchat: “You already know you ain’t my fav app out there! You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV ( domestic violence) victims and made a joke of it!!!… shame on you.”

Social media users and fans supported Rihanna’s “fight” with Snapchat.

Rihanna and ex-flame Brown had an altercation the night of the 2009 Grammys which left Rihanna bloodied and bruised. Photos of the incident were leaked to the public then.

Brown pleaded guilty to the said assault and was sentenced to serve five years probation and to render 1,400 hours of community service.

Snapchat apologized for the ad and reported that it has already removed the offensive ad last weekend after it started to appear.

Snap released a statement and described the ad as “disgusting” and said that it should never have appeared on the service. Snap said: “We are so sorry we made the terrible mistake of allowing it through our review process. We are investigating how that happened so that we can make sure it never happens again.”

Previous to Rihanna, reality star Kylie Jenner also criticized Snapchat saying she didn’t care for the app’s re-design, sending Snap’s stock to fall by 6.1%.

Wow, what were they thinking? I mean, it's not quite the same as the Facebook poll asking if you think child porn and exploitation should be allowed/condoned on the platform, but DAMN it's getting pretty obvious that big tech is fairly oblivious and out of touch.
