Part Of I-85 Collapses In Atlanta After Massive Fire

A section of Interstate 85 located north downtown Atlanta has collapsed this was after a massive fire broke out underneath the busy highway.The Atlanta fire officials have reported that the fire caught huge coils of plastic utility pipes that under the overpass. Before the collapse was reported, structural engineers had expressed fears about fire melting the metal under the bridge. No casualties have reported after the incident.The collapse caused both sides of the interstate to be shut down as traffic was being routed into interstate 75 and other surface streets. The authorities also asked drivers to keep their windows closed due to the hazardous fumes.The fire started at around 6 p.m. the Atlanta fire officials said that they have struck at least two alarms to try to combat the fire.Residents around the neighborhood reported that the surrounding area got dark all of a sudden and some even thought it was about to rain. It is unclear how the fire started. However, witnesses told reported that Atlanta state troopers were telling cars to turn around on the bridge minutes before it collapsed because they were concerned about its integrity. All of the firefighters were able to get out of the area prior to the collapse.Black smoke rising from the flames could be seen for several miles away and was posted to social media by commuters in the Atlanta metro area.The incident also led to the closure of Piedmont Road and a portion of the Buford Connector. The GDOT was diverting all traffic off the interstate. The Southbound traffic on I-85 is being diverted at both North Druid Hills and Clairmont roads. Southbound traffic on Georgia 400 is being diverted at Lenox Road.A dark smoke plume could be seen for miles around the fire. No firefighters were hurt in fighting the blaze.
