A rather gruesome discovery was made in the frozen land of Siberia when a hand was discovered on a river island near the city of Khabarovsk. That was just the tip of the iceberg, after the discovery of a single human hand was made, a bag containing exactly 54 severed hands was also located.
Local police are now investigating the mysterious discovery and they managed to sort them into 27 matching pairs of hands. The hands were laid out on the ice in pairs for an unnerving photo. The severed human hands were discovered on an island in the Amur River near Khabarovsk, a city of 590,000 in southeastern Russia.

The location is in close proximity to the Chinese border but who exactly the hands belonged to remains a mystery. The island lies in the Beshennaya channel of the Amur River which is a popular fishing destination for the local inhabitants. Authorities have managed to lift a pair of fingerprints from one of the hands which will likely aid in the identification process.
Investigators are still unsure about the age of the hands or when the bag was dumped. The images of the gruesome extremities seem to indicate they were recently severed. Despite having no leads, investigators have two theories:
Either the hands were severed as punishment for crimes such as theft, or they were possibly medical amputations perhaps chopped off cadavers by medical students looking to practice their skills. According to local media, there were medical bandages and hospital-style plastic shoes discovered next to the hands.

Usually, when body parts are severed in a medical scenario they are incinerated, but its possible they were looking for a less expensive way to dispose of the hands. This is, of course, all speculation but someone out there has to know who the hands belonged to.
