Germany: Constitutional Court Rules in Favor Of AfD, Against Merkel’s Party

European politics is changing.

Whereas at first, the press started to realize the major shift to the right after elections in the Netherlands, the UK, Poland, Hungary, Austria, France and Germany all resulted in resounding blows to the leftwing parties, it is now also the courts that are following suit.

In Germany, the highest court has just ruled that the Education Minister, Ms Johanna Wanka (of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU Party) acted unconstitutional and ‘exceeded the neutrality of her office’ when she called in 2015 for a boycott of the Alternative For Germany party in the midst of the immigrant crisis as she claimed the right-wing nationalist party were acting against the will of the people and wanted to show them a ‘red card.’

The head of the AfD party, Mr Alexander Gauland, was quick to praise the court's ruling, stating: "Thank God there are still judges in Karlsruhe."

Another head of the AfD, Mr Jörg Meuthen hoped the court’s decision "should be a lesson for other government ministers."
