A ferry exploded in a beach resort in Mexico leaving 25 people injured, including two Americans.

The ferry was docked at the tourist resort town of Playa del Carmen when one of the sides appeared to explode. The ferry is owned by Barcos Caribe.

Authorities reported that 15 Mexicans and three Canadians were also injured from the explosion.

An official statement also said the victims were brought to the hospital to be treated for cuts from the blast. There were no life-threatening injuries.

Images from the resort show the damage done to the side of the ferry and people with injuries to their arms and legs.

The explosion sent a fireball across the dock and took place just as people were disembarking from the ferry. Debris flew sideways.

Initial reports say the blast may have been caused by a gas leak or an engine failure.

The affected area has been cordoned off. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Contacto Urbano reports that the ferry company has links to the former Governor Roberto Borge Angulo.
