Video - Europe Expects ‘Beast From The East’

There was a run on flight tickets to sunny destinations in most travel agencies over the past few days as the whole of Western Europe was warned that, just like the US (where it is referred to as a Polar Vortex), the ‘old continent’ would be visited by Siberian snow next week.

In what forecasters have dubbed the ‘Beast From The East’ all computer models are now showing that freezing weather could last until spring when a rare North Pole phenomenon will bring a prolonged spell of cold weather to Europe which might last well into next month, March.

According to the UK’s Met Office a rare North Pole phenomenon called a "sudden stratospheric warming" will result in bitterly cold air sweeping in from Siberia.

<blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Easterly winds from Siberia will bring increasingly <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/cold?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#cold</a> conditions to northern Europe later this week and during the weekend. Nicknamed the ‘beast from the east’, the coldest air will arrive in the UK by the start of next week <a href="https://t.co/mZBMZsujvR">https://t.co/mZBMZsujvR</a> <a href="https://t.co/PrUybMCEqi">pic.twitter.com/PrUybMCEqi</a></p>&mdash; Met Office (@metoffice) <a href="https://twitter.com/metoffice/status/965971249733173248?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 20, 2018</a></blockquote>

Meteorologist Ms Joanna Robinson explained: "There is increasing confidence that easterly winds will develop, dragging in very cold air from Siberia as early as next week.”

"This set up is often referred to as the 'Beast from the East'.”

Next week temperatures are expected to drop to 1C or 2C (33F or 35F) for most of Western Europe, with -5C (23F) at night.
