Tragic Bus Crash Leaves 35 People Dead in Southern Peru

A tragic accident in the nation of Peru, where a bus carrying 35 people has veered off the side of a mountain and killed 35 of the passengers on board.

20 other passengers were reportedly seriously injured in the accident, as the bus tumbled over the Pan-American highway, crashing 80 meters down into a ravine on Wednesday in the southern region of Arequipa.

"So far the bus accident has left 35 dead and 20 injured," said Arequipa police chief General Walter Ortiz. "45 people were registered as passengers on the bus. However, this does not match the number of people killed and injured."

According to Peru State News Agency Andina, the crash occurred at around 1:30 PM with initial reports of 20 dead and 20 injured, although those numbers were unfortunately upgraded.

Each of the severely injured was transported to the city of Camana for medical treatment, with at least three transported via helicopter to the regional capital of Arequipa, Civil Defense chief Jacqueline Choque said.

The bus, operated by being Rey Latino company, had left the coastal town of Chala for Arequipa just four hours before the crash happened.

This is the second major accident on the roads of Peru in just a year, with another tragedy occurring on January 2nd after a bus crashed into a ravine in the central coastal region of Peru that left 52 others dead.
