#Twitterlockout - Bahrain Jails Activist For 5 Years Over Critical Tweets

For all the talk today about Twitter cleaning up their unused accounts and mostly taking away followers from anyone not really agreeing with the mainstream media, we just want to tell you, it can always be worse.

In the Islamic Kingdom of Bahrain today, a well-known rights activist has been sentenced to five years in prison over his social media posts.

Mr Nabeel Rajab, who led the way during the 2011's pro-democracy protests, was convicted by an Islamic court over posts on Twitter about the alleged torture of prisoners in the country.

He should be exonerated and released.</p>&mdash; Hanan Salah (@HananMSalah) <a href="https://twitter.com/HananMSalah/status/966223664806092800?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 21, 2018</a></blockquote>

He had also dared to criticise Saudi Arabia's actions in Yemen.

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights claimed that mr Rajab was convicted on "trumped-up charges" following "a trial that was by itself a mockery of justice."

"The torture against detainees at Jaw prison and the killing of civilians in Yemen by the Saudi-led coalition,” are all that he said, the organization added.

A Twitter account of his family confirmed the news: "His first reaction after the verdict was laughing and raising the sign of steadfastness."

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">This sentence against <a href="https://twitter.com/RaftoFoundation?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@RaftoFoundation</a> laureate <a href="https://twitter.com/NABEELRAJAB?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@NABEELRAJAB</a> for tweets is a sad testimony about the lack of free speech in <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Bahrain?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Bahrain</a>. Ha, journalist Geoff Golberg was covering this story about how many "users" on Twitter are actually bots THEN he got locked out of his account (accused of being a bot).

Hmmm…
