Red Stripe To Buy Jamaican Team New Bobsled After Coach Quits

The coach for the Jamaican women's bobsled team walked off from the Olympics and threatened to take the team's bobsled with her leaving the team without a bobsled to race in.

Just days before the race and without a sled, the Jamaican bobsled team was losing hope to be able to compete in the Olympics. Now, American beer maker Red Stripe has stepped up to provide the team with a new ride.

Soon after, the Jamaican bobsled team responded with a tweet essentially accepting the offer. Hours later, the Jamaica Gleaner news site reported that a new sled had been secured.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">.<a href="https://twitter.com/RedStripeUSA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@RedStripeUSA</a> has purchased a sled for the Jamaica Bobsled and Skeleton Federation as a gift just ahead of their participation in the women’s bobsled competition at the <a href="https://twitter.com/pyeongchang2018?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@pyeongchang2018</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/WinterOlympics?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#WinterOlympics</a></p>&mdash; Jamaica Gleaner (@JamaicaGleaner) <a href="https://twitter.com/JamaicaGleaner/status/964352956882608129?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 16, 2018</a></blockquote>

This was far from the first problem the Jamaican women's bobsled team has faced. One problem that nearly took away their chance to compete altogether was a contract they had previously entered into with the ShitamachiBobsleigh Network Project.

The ShitamachiBobsleigh project required the team to compete with a Tokyo-made bobsled, which was custom made for the Jamaican team or face a penalty.

However, when it came time to use the specially designed bobsled it never showed up prompting the team's coach to seek a rental. It is unclear if the ShitamachiBobsleigh project will actually seek the $618,000 in damages. <a href="http://www.rjrnewsonline.com/sports/bobsleigh-federation-and-japanese-manufacturer-in-legal-battle">As reported be RNR News</a>, they "[…] are in discussions with Shitamachi to resolve the issue," according to Chris Stokes, the president of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Federation.

Jamaican athletes Carrie Russell and Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian became the Caribbean island’s first women’s bobsled team to make it to the Olympic Games. The pair are competing to qualify as Jamaica's first female Olympic bobsledders.

If the team qualifies, they will begin training runs in Pyeongchang on Saturday and will be competing for a medal as early as next week.
