Authorities took the 19-year-old Florida Parkland High School shooter into custody Wednesday "without incident" an hour after he left the school.

Just minutes before his arrest, Nikolas Cruz was firing a semiautomatic rifle into his former classmates at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Wednesday killing 17 people and injuring 14 more.

It appears Cruz acted alone and was a former student at the high school of some 3,200 students. He was expelled previously for undisclosed reasons but classmates cited a history of bringing weapons to school including bullets in his backpack.

One person even wrote a letter to the school suggesting Cruz never be allowed on campus with a backpack. U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson said Cruz wore a gas mask while and used smoke bombs to cause confusion as he indiscriminately fired into classrooms full of students.

Jim Gard, who taught one of Cruz's classes in 2016, said he was surprised to hear of the shooting. "He was a quiet kid in class, I never had any problems with Nick," Gard said.

"Some of the girls in my class said that I guess he had some problems with some other girls, but that’s hearsay and all that. As far as my class goes, I remember an email or two from admin [expressing concern] but I can’t remember exactly what it said," he said.

"We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him," Gard continued. "There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus."

Deputies arrested Cruz in the Wyndham Lakes community in Coral Springs around 4 p.m. Wednesday, a little over an hour after the shooting started and around 1 mile away from the school.

So far authorities have not revealed a motive but have found several pictures of Cruz holding weapons on his social media accounts. Anyone with any information about this event or Cruz is asked to call 1-800-Call-FBI.
