Florida – 17 Dead in Parkland School Shooting

Parkland high school in Florida was the site of a terrible shooting Wednesday that took the lives of 17 people and wounded 15 others.

Expelled student Nikolas Cruz,19 years old, entered the high school with what appears to be a .223 caliber semiautomatic rifle and indiscriminately fired into classrooms. The school is home to around 2,972 students, 17 of which were killed by Cruz Wednesday. The shooter was taken into custody by police.

Cruz bragged about shooting rats with BB guns on social media and brought bullets to school. He was expelled for an undisclosed reason and had been identified by school administrators who considered him enough of a potential threat that prompted a warning emailed last year against allowing him on campus with a backpack.

One student named Joshua Charo described Cruz saying, "All he would talk about is guns, knives, and hunting. I can’t say I was shocked. From past experiences, he seemed like the kind of kid who would do something like this." Today's shooting marks the third deadliest school shooting in American history.

Detectives have been combing the 19-year-old shooter's social media and found he had displayed plenty of troubling behavior although he had no previous arrests. Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said, "Our investigators began dissecting social media. Some of the things that come to mind are very very disturbing."

The school's website had a statement from the Principal from prior to the shooting, "My team is committed to implementing my vision for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School by: maintaining a safe, secure, and engaging environment where students are encouraged to think critically and communicate and collaborate effectively ensuring they are prepared for life after high school."
