We still haven't fully reached a point in society where being openly gay is completely tolerated, there are still pockets of religious groups and other institutions such as Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School in Miami that frown on the idea of homosexuality.
Now, parents of students from Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School are speaking out after a first-grade teacher that was popular with her students was fired after she posted pictures of her wedding on social media.
Jocelyn Morffi is openly gay and after marrying another woman, she posted pictures of the ceremony on Facebook. Just a few days later she was fired on Thursday.
Principal Carlota Morales seems to be behind the decision to fire Morffi and issued a statement to parents in the form of a letter where she calls it a "difficult and necessary" decision.
After Morales announced the decision to fire Morffi, nearly a dozen parents of children from her class came to the school in protest. Parents praised Morffi as a "great teacher" and said the fact she was openly gay made no difference in her role as a teacher.
One parent named Christina Lopez said, "I'm upset. The way they handled this was just unbelievable."
Another parent named Ricardo Oviedo said, "What she does at home, that’s none of our concern. The fact is, she maintained a high moral standard at school and was inscribing in our kids a sense of community and love."
Parents also demanded a satisfactory explanation for why Morffi was fired but even after a meeting with school administration none was provided.
A parent named Cynthia Cini said, "You know, to be a Catholic, you’re taught to be forgiving. But if you’re gay, forget about it. But love is love."
The Archdiocese of Miami condoned the school's decision to fire Morffi saying she "broke the contract she signed when she began teaching at a Catholic school."
