"I am here tonight to let you know that tragically we lost one of our own."

Those are the words of Richardson Police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Perlich who bore the grim responsibility of conveying the death of an officer in the line of duty.

Police responded to a disturbance call at Breckinridge Point Apartments near E. Renner and North Star roads Wednesday night. When they arrived they immediately encountered gunfire.

A Richardson officer was struck and taken to Medical City Plano where he died hours later. The identity of the officer who was slain has not been released. Police are currently in an active-shooter negotiation with the suspect responsible for killing the officer.

Details surrounding the disturbance call and what led to the shooting have not been released but NBC 5 confirmed a civilian was also shot. That person's condition is also unknown.

Currently, the suspect is barricaded in an apartment unit at the complex and police are working to end the situation. Police advise all residents of the complex and nearby areas to stay inside their homes.
