The Palestinian Liberation Organization's (PLO) Executive Committee is demanding the UN Security Council recognize a Palestinian State within the 1967 borders Saturday night. For those unfamiliar with the shifting desert sands that are Israel's borders since 1948, up until the 6 days war Jerusalem was still a part of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The PLO's leadership committee wants to unveil a plan for complete disengagement from Israel as far as both security forces and economy goes. This would include the agreements as part of the "Paris Protocols."
The 1994 protocol established a customs union between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Palestinian Authority officials are also calling on the International Criminal Court in the Hague and the General Assembly. PLO is ordering the Palestinian government to draw up an "emergency action plan."
The PLO, based in the West Bank city of Ramallah, has described President Donald Trump's Palestine policy as "against national legitimate decisions," and urges lawmakers in Washington to review it.
As far as the President's "Palestine policy" many in the Arab and Muslim world have been up in arms since the December 6 decree by Trump acknowledging Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
Jerusalem is a Holy Land for three of the top world religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam) and has been at the center of the Middle Eastern and Palestinian conflict for decades of illegal occupation. PLO officials still hope that Jerusalem might eventually serve as the capital of a potential Palestinian state. I wish them luck but urge against holding your breath waiting for such an outcome.
