Fidel “Fidelito” Castro Díaz-Balart, the oldest son of legendary revolutionist leader Fidel Castor, has committed suicide on Thursday in Havana at the age of 68.

‘Fidelito’, who earned the nickname due to his resemblance to his father, had, according to Cuban state media, sought medical attention in the past few months after falling into a “deep depression”.

The Cuban press report read that: “His delicate health situation required hospitalization and then continued with outpatient follow-ups as he reintegrated himself back into society.”

Born in 1949 to Fidel Castro and his first wife, Mirta Diaz-Balart, Mr Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart was a nuclear physicist who got his training in the Soviet Union.

Along with Castro’s wife Dalia Soto del Valle, Fidelito and six siblings formed Castro’s family.

He was left in charge of Cuba's national nuclear program from 1980 to 1992 until his father and he fell out in a public spat and his father fired him.

At the time of his death, he carried the official title of scientific counselor to the Cuban Council of State and vice president of the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

His father, Fidel Castro, died in 2016. The country is currently being led by Fidel’s brother Raul.
