As we’ve told you a few days ago, there is a bizarre new trend on the internet which we forecasted would become very popular in a very short time. It’s called FakeApp (or Deepfake) and it allows you to paste the face of your favorite person (or celebrity) onto any movie and let AI fill out the movement so that it corresponds.

Results are mixed at best at this point even though the app has been downloaded more than 100,000 times already since its inception.
Although we can only speculate at this point, it is probably the legal department over at Reddit who noticed something was amiss when yesterday they all of a sudden started cleaning content from their site. Here is an overview of most of those that you won’t see anymore:

One user noted : “I just noticed that my upload yesterday was deleted, could be a copyright issue,”
Another chimes in: “I don’t think it’s copyright since random Japanese idols with little to minimal presence in the West have been removed” another Redditor chimed in. even the botched ones that have no resemblance to any human being are gone. That suggests someone from Gfycat proactively removed all the gifs linked here.”
The results - known as deepfakes - differ in quality. Her is for example Nicolas Cage’s face pasted into several clips

But in some cases, and as we are sure you will admit where the two people involved are of a similar build, they can be quite convincing.
Reddit has so far not commented on the news. It still provides access to clips that Gfycat has yet to delete, as well as deepfakes hosted by others. Reddit content policy normally prohibits "involuntary pornography".
