Police are searching for a savage criminal who killed a 4-month-old dog and hung it from her leash on a tree in Sacramento. A $120,000 reward was offered to find the puppy's killers who brutally beat the dog and shot it with a BB gun before hanging it.
Chief Animal Control Officer Jase Huggins said, "It's a horrific case. It's probably the worst one I've seen since I've been here working for the city." A passerby stumbled upon the gruesome scene Friday while walking along the bike path near Riverside Boulevard and Rio Viale Court.
Investigators say they believe the dog was a Chihuahua-terrier mix and she only weighed about 12 pounds. "From nose to tail, there wasn't any part of this puppy – about a 4-month-old puppy – that didn't have fractures somewhere on her body. She had abdominal trauma that was so bad that the veterinarian described her liver to look like hamburger meat," Huggins said.
The local residents are horrified by the disturbing act of violence in their own neighborhood and they want whoever is responsible brought to justice. One man who lives in the area named Steven Beard said, "I'm watching everything all the time when I'm down here cause you never know when they're gonna come out."
Investigators say they must rely on the public to make an arrest due to a lack of witnesses or leads. Huggins went on to say, "We have to catch this person. … We have a really high concern when we see this amount of violence perpetrated against a defenseless animal like that."
"That that person is capable of committing violence against another person, another child, and another animal."
