Breaking: 9 Injured In Volcano Eruption Near Japan Ski Resort

Authorities in central Japan say at least 9 people have been injured at a ski resort after a nearby volcanic eruption.

At least some of the victims were known to have been injured on the gondola when the window was shattered by volcanic rocks, and others were also believed to have been hit by falling rocks on the slopes of the ski resort, according to Kusatsu town official Makoto Shinohara.

Five of the nine injured victims appear to have suffered broken bones, but not of the injuries were considered life-threatening. Japanese military confirmed six soldiers were buried by an avalanche among about 30 on ski training but all had been pulled from the snow alive.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Mount Kusatsu-Shirane erupted around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning. A structure at the resort used as a rest house was hit by volcanic rocks.

Resort official Yasuaki Morita said the extent of the damage is unknown. Aerial photographs showed a large portion of the snowy volcano covered in dark gray ash.
