2 Americans And 2 Canadians Abducted In Nigeria Are Freed

Earlier this week in Nigeria, two Americans and two Canadians were abducted by men armed with guns in the north-central state of Kaduna. The westerners were kidnapped Tuesday but police say they have now been freed and are in good condition.

It took a special anti-kidnapping squad along with local police to rescue the foreigners in the Kagarko local government area. The rescue took place Friday night after a massive manhunt, according to state police commissioner Agyole Abeh.

Commissioner Abeh attributed the safe rescue of the victims to the excellent work of the authorities, "No ransom was paid. It was the efforts of the police through the directives of the Inspector General of Police that led to their release."

Authorities apprehended one suspect in connection with the kidnapping and are on the trail of the remaining suspects according to Abeh. The two Americans and two Canadians were taken to the capital, Abuja, according to Kaduna state police spokesman Mukhtar Aliya.

"They are in good condition but due to the trauma they have to undergo medical observation," Aliya said. The gunmen ambushed the victims as they were traveling from Kafanchan in Kaduna state to Abuja Tuesday. They were traveling with two police escorts who gave their lives defending the travelers in a shootout with the attackers.

The two victims from America as well as the two Canadian victims have not yet been publicly identified.

A statement from the U.S. State Department said, "we are aware of reports of two U.S. citizens kidnapped and released in Nigeria. The safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas are among our top priorities. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment."
