The mass shooter who killed 58 people in Las Vegas in October left many wounds in innocent people around the world. Folks wondered whether Paddock had all his mental faculties intact.
Some items found on him suggest that the notorious criminal was not okay, according to Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo the guy kept child pornography on his computer and amassed large stockpiles of weapons before the massacre.
The release of a lengthy report was authorized by Lombardo on Friday detailing the movements of Stephen Paddock before the carnage. This included his check-in at the Ogden Motel in downtown Las Vegas up to officers breaching the door of his Mandalay Bay hotel room.
The Sheriff said this wasn't standard practice - not releasing more information on the shooting to the public since mid-October. “This is a unique circumstance,” he said.
Claims alleging that the mass shooting was an act of terrorism pointed out by Pennsylvania congressman Thursday were dismissed by Lombardo.
“I’d like to see the evidence,” he said sharply. Tight security at the police department’s headquarters can be attributed to the conspiracies that have swirled around the massacre. According to Lombardo, Paddock was the lone gunman.
“There was one shooter in the [Oct. 1] massacre,” Lombardo said. “There was only one person responsible, and that was Stephen Paddock.”
Paddock’s girlfriend, Marilou Danley, is lucky. The sheriff said his department was not bringing charges against her after she had been named a person of interest in the shooting early in the investigation. She was featured prominently in search warrants and affidavits unsealed by a federal judge last week.
Bruce Paddock, Paddock’s brother, 58, was arrested at a Valley Village nursing home in October in Los Angeles after he was found in possession of child pornography. Thereafter, he was charged with 20 counts of sexual exploitation of a child or possessing child pornography dating back to 2014.
Friday's report offered insight into the mass shooter. Investigators who interviewed Danley were told the 64-year-old’s demeanor had changed over the past year.
He became “distant” and their relationship “was no longer intimate.” She described him as “germaphobic and having strong reactions to smell.” She also recalled him behaving “strangely” during a September stay at Mandalay Bay, also pointing out that looked out windows where the Route 91 Harvest country music concert took place.
“Paddock would move from window to window looking at the site from different angles,” the report said.
Lombardo said the report doesn’t answer why Paddock committed the crime. However, a partial explanation may have to do with him losing a large sum of money before the shooting. It’s alleged that he was a heavy gambler who played video poker.
It should be noted that nobody considering themselves a professional gambler would ever touch a video poker machine unless it was rigged.
The sheriff’s department has investigated 1,965 leads, reviewed 21,560 hours of video and obtained more than 251,000 images gathered by the FBI and Las Vegas police. The report also showed there were 529 sightings of Paddock. Four laptop computers and three cellphones were found by investigators in his two Mandalay Bay rooms.
