Hungary Defines 'Stop Soros' Legislation

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban likes to push buttons. Never afraid of a fight, he has taken aim at the European Commission’s immigrant policy and who he claims to be the driving force behind it: Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros. In order to stop Soros in Hungary, Mr. Orban’s Jobbik political party will present legislation to limit the power of NGO’s aimed at the benefit of migrants.

The feud between the two men is much like a long and winding road. When in university, Mr. Orban studied thanks to a grant given to students by Mr. Soros, but as soon as he clung to power, Mr. Orban rejected the ideas the US financier when it comes to immigration and diversity.

Mr. Soros calls the campaign launched against him by the right-wing government of Mr. Orban as “distortions and lies” meant to create a false external enemy.

According to a draft law, the package which will be named “Stop Soros” contains mandatory registration of some non-government organizations that “support illegal immigration” and is clearly aimed at any group Mr. Soros supports.

Furthermore, a 25 percent tax would be imposed on any foreign donations such an NGO collects.

Orban’s government explains in the position paper that “illegal mass immigration is a problem that affects Europe as a whole, posing serious security risks.”

The Jobbik party spokesman, Mr. Kovacs said: “If Soros is found to have engaged in such activity, meaning he organizes illegal immigration, then the rules will apply to him.”
