Breaking News: Magnitude 7.8 Earthquake Strikes off Central America

According to USGS, a powerful preliminary magnitude 7.8 earthquake strikes in the Caribbean Sea north of Honduras, between Honduras and Cuba.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warns that tsunami waves are possible in the region.

A tsunami warning has been issued for hurricane devastated islands of Puerto Rico, the British and Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, and Nicaragua.

The earthquake is estimated to have hit 44km east of Great Swan Island, Honduras.

The USGS also said that the massive quake was centered 125 miles northeast of Barra Patuca in Honduras and 191 miles southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands.

It was estimated to be very shallow, only 6.2 miles or 10 km, which would have amplified its effect.

No immediate reports of damage were immediately relayed to government offices or the media. More information is still being gathered, however, from the areas hardest-hit and affected.

Distance from Great Swan island Honduras to Puerto Rico is about 1100 miles. I doubt my In-laws in PR will see much more than some good surf.

However, the Caymans just 95 miles away where all the Rich $$$$ is hidden from taxes might see far more…☺
