A Houston woman killed her husband and two children on Monday before shooting herself in a room at the San Luis Resort in Galveston.
Someone who heard several gunshots coming from the eight floor of the resort called the Galveston police at about 4:30 a.m.
When the police officers arrived at the resort, they heard faint moaning coming from the room of the family. The officers forced their way into the room and found 39-year-old Mauricio Canas and a 5-year-old boy dead. Police also discovered a 10-year-old boy and 37-year-old Flor De Maria Pineda Canas critically wounded.
The injured were taken to UTMB where they later died.
The detectives working on the case confirmed that the family arrived at the San Luis Resort and checked in around 7 p.m. Sunday night. Forensic data collected at the scene indicates that the mother is the shooter believed to have killed her two sons and husband before ending her life with a 9mm handgun found beside her body. The motive for the apparent murder-suicide is still unknown.
The police also say there did not appear any signs that a struggle between the shooter and the victims took place. Investigators believe that the sons and husband were killed while they were sleeping.
The boys were enrolled as a kindergarten and fifth grader at Victoria Walker Elementary.
Neighbors of the family and the school administrators and officials were shocked by the tragedy that struck the family. One neighbor even said they are a “loving family” and that “there was nothing strange about that family.”
The investigators are still probing what led to the unthinkable incident.
It is not clear if the family was going through difficult times before the murder-suicide took place, or if the mother had mental issues.
