Researchers have come out with a literally explosive solution to address impotence- a dynamite gel containing the explosive nitroglycerin.
They have conducted trials, rubbing on a pea-size blob of the gel. It delivered a positive result within 10 minutes for seven in 10 men with erectile dysfunction.
It is also said to work 12 times faster than Viagra.
The erectile solution works by releasing a nitric oxide gas that widens tiny blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the penis.
University College London Hospitals and other centers also conducted trials on more than 220 men with erectile dysfunction.
Half of the men were given the new treatment, while the other half were provided with just a dummy gel.
The study found that 44 percent of the men who were given the real gel achieved the desired erections in just a matter of five minutes. Others took less than 10 minutes.
In contrast, viagra, and other impotence pills usually take between 30 minutes and an hour for those to take effect.
Consultant urologist David Ralph said: “Potential advantages include the potential for fast action and ease of use. Their use could be incorporated into sexual foreplay, increasing the level of intimacy between couples.”
The researchers are satisfied with the results as one in four men experienced a clinically significant improvement. The side effects were just mild, with around one in 13 suffering headaches.
Medics are looking at the possibility of tweaking the formula to produce even better results.
Causes of erectile dysfunction can be due to physical or psychological reasons-ranging from stress to conditions affecting blood flow, such as heart disease and diabetes. Many are no longer responding to drugs such as Viagra.
More tests are in the offing and researchers say the gel may become available by next year and may cost $1.25 daily for a year's supply.
