A recently released VA document reveals the Colorado gunman who killed a sheriff's deputy escaped from a mental health ward of a VA hospital in Wyoming back in 2014.
The Veterans Affairs document was released by a unanimous congressional aide who was not authorized to release it. In the document, it shows Mathew Riehl fled from the mental health ward but was located and returned.

Riehl fatally shot a Douglas County Deputy Zackari Parrish (pictured above) and wounded four other officers last Sunday in what authorities are calling an ambush targeting law enforcement.
The document said Riehl was hospitalized at the veterans medical center in Sheridan, Wyoming, in April 2014 after he had apparently suffered a psychotic episode.
The VA released an official statement saying, "cannot ordinarily discuss the specific care of any veteran without a privacy release." The document also revealed Riehl had an "urgent contact for mental health" in 2015 but did not describe the nature of the event.
The document did say that Riehl was on multiple medications which were the result of a 2015 hospitalization but didn't say which medications they were.

Riehl is an Army veteran who served in Iraq and was honorably discharged. The Douglas County Deputy he killed was a father of two named Zackari Parrish. Riehl was also killed in the shootout.
