A police officer in Gainesville, Florida recently gained some unexpected fame after his photo went viral and he was labeled a "hot cop" by social media users while responding to Hurricane Irma.
Now, that officer has resigned from the department amid allegations he made anti-Semitic Facebook posts and had sex with a woman while he was on duty. Michael Hamill was working for the Gainesville Police Department when he was suspended in September for the alleged Facebook posts.
On December 6, Hamill resigned on the same day he was scheduled to be interviewed in an Internal Affairs investigation. Hamill was hired in 2016 and it is believed he would have been terminated following the investigation by Internal Affairs. Department spokesman Ben Tobias confirmed the allegations would have been sustained based on evidence.
The photo that went viral was shared early September when the department posted a selfie of Hamill and two other GPD officers "getting ready to do some work" as Hurricane Irma was wreaking havoc across Florida. The Facebook post garnered media attention nationwide and inspired thousands of admirers including other police departments who began posting their own studly officers on social media.
In the following weeks after the September 10 post, the Gainesville police department received complaints about Facebook posts and a sexual relationship Hamill had with a woman. Investigators found Hamill made two posts on his personal Facebook account before he was on the Gainesville police force.
One post was made in 2011 that said, "Stupid people annoy me. put them in an oven and deal with them the Hitler way. Haha." The second post was made in 2014 and said, "What's the difference between boy scouts and Jews?… Boy scouts come back from their camps." Neither joke is in very good taste and it is surprising these posts weren't uncovered while Hamill was being screened leading up to his hiring.
The department concluded the posts were of an "offensive nature" and affected Hamill's ability to interact with the community. Investigators also found Hamill had sex with a woman while he was on duty using interviews, GPS readings, and text messages to prove it. The woman told detectives the on-duty visits stopped after she found out Hamill was married. The sexual encounters occurred after Hamill's photo went viral.
The department has said they will begin requiring all recruits to visit the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida before being sworn in. It's not clear what the logic is there or why all future recruits will have to pay for the mistakes of one man who should never have been hired.
