Mayfield was charged Wednesday in the fatal shooting of Jamahri Sydnor on August 10. Sydnor was a high school graduate and she was just days away from beginning college.
Detectives also attribute the murders of a 38-year-old man Tuesday, and a 21-year-old man on Wednesday to Mayfield. Police also say Mayfield conducted at least three robberies in the area this week alone.
Mayfield's charges include three counts of first-degree murder while armed, plus attempted robbery and carrying a pistol without a license. The 17-year-old girl's mother is also a D.C. police Sgt named Que Wallace.
Wallace said of her daughter's killer, "He's a monster. He is a monster. And it's just sad that he had the opportunity to strike yet twice again."
Sydnor was struck by a stray bullet August 10 as she drove along the 1400 block of Saratoga Ave less than a mile from her home. She died just two days later.
Wallace described the agony of losing her daughter, "My heart dropped. My stomach felt like it was just absolutely going to throw up. [Jamahri] was doing what she was supposed to do, getting ready for a wedding, taking my grandson to get his hair cut and she got in his way. How is that? It's awful."
Mayfield is the third person to be charged in relation to Sydnor's killing. Wallace described Mayfield as "a good example of how one person can create so much violence in our city."
The killer was arrested Wednesday after he tried to rob a man at gunpoint around 9 a.m. Police were able to identify and arrest him as a suspect in a murder of a man on Tuesday and the second man on Wednesday.
