19kg Japanese Woman Dies After Being Held Captive By Parents For Decade

A case of extreme neglect and parental torture hits from Japan where police stated they’ve arrested a couple whose 33-year-old daughter, named Airi Kakimoto, was found frozen to death in a tiny room where they had confined her for 15 years as they were convinced the girl had a form of mental illness that made her violent towards her own parents.

Police quoted the parents as saying: “Our daughter was mentally ill and, from age 16 or 17, she became violent, so we kept her inside the room.”

In Japan’s culture, people that suffer from mental and physical disabilities and their families still suffer stigma and shame.

By now, Mr Yasutaka Kakimoto, 55-years-old, and Ms Yukari Kakimoto, 53-years-old, confessed that they fed their daughter only once a day and kept her in a 3-square-metre room for some 15 years. When she was found, the girl was only 145cm tall and weighed an astonishing 19 kilograms only.

The small room had been fitted with a camera and a door that could only be locked from the outside. The parents had installed a small toilet and fitted it with a tube to a water tank outside the house. In case she would ever escape, they had fitted the house with 10 surveillance cameras and placed a 2 meters high fence around the entire premises.

The girl passed away on 18 December already according to the autopsy report but the parents only reported the death a week later, claiming that “We wanted to be together with our daughter.”

Western Japan’s Osaka Prefectural Police Department stated that at this moment, the couple was arrested on suspicion of illegally disposing of a body. Police were looking to build charges of confinement and dereliction of responsibility as guardians.

To put this in clear USA measurement understanding.

19kg is approximately equal to 42 LBS.
