The Goldwater :Top 10 2017 News Stories

1. <b>President Donald Trump<b/>

As 2017 comes to a close it marks the first year since President Trump took office in a political victory that shocked the world. Most laughed off the idea of the former game show personality (who also happens to be a billionaire) running for president and perhaps that's what helped him cement his victory. While Democrats dismissed Trump initially and were too busy fighting among themselves, by the time they realized he was a serious contender it was too late.

Trump became the 45th American president and with his rise to office came a heated political divide as groups like Anti-fa sprung up in support, and others like Black Lives Matter spurred in protest as Kandy Freeman can be seen here with the group protesting in front of Trump Tower in NYC.

Since being elected, President Trump has seen major changes take place in government. Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris Agreement, fired the head of the FBI James Comey, Obamacare was repealed, the US and many other countries worked together to all but eradicate terror group ISIS's stronghold in the middle east, and he even made one of the most controversial tweets of the year saying "covfefe" sparking all kinds of conspiracy theories and memes.

2. <b> Russia <b/>

Number two is closely tied with president Trump since it largely involves an investigation into alleged collusion between President Trump's campaign and Russia. The news outlets that Trump has an issue with, like CNN whom he calls out regularly, use their widespread reach to fight back at Trump and there is no end to the slinging of poison, much of which is focused on a Trump/Russia collusion narrative despite the Mueller investigation turning up no ties to him. Although Trump's campaign manager was federally indicted for tax fraud and money laundering, and former General Michael Flynn was also charged with lying to the FBI, no such links have been proven.

3.<b> #metoo <b/>

Along with a charade of fake news, the mainstream media has done some good by giving a voice to the countless sexual harassment and abuse victims ultimately leading them to realize there is strength in numbers. Beginning with taking down Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein for his sick, and perverted sexual assaults, the hashtag quickly spread to include all victims of sexual harassment, especially in the workplace. One Weinstein victim released a list of 82 women who had come forward to claim he abused them. Among the list were many A-list actresses from Kate Beckinsale to Gwyneth Paltrow.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Despite thousands of hours wasted and many millions of dollars spent, the Democrats have been unable to show any collusion with Russia - so now they are moving on to the false accusations and fabricated stories of women who I don’t know and/or have never met. FAKE NEWS!</p>&mdash; Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href="">December 12, 2017</a></blockquote>

<script async src="" charset="utf-8"></script>

The hashtag #metoo began trending on Twitter in October 2017 in direct response to disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein. Soon the hashtag was used by woman all around the world who had enough of being sexually harassed in the workplace and otherwise.

Even the president's name was dragged into the #metoo controversy when news tabloids began reporting false rape stories. He responded on his usual platform, Twitter, with this tweet. You can't bring up the #metoo hashtag without mentioning actress Rose McGowan who was among Harvey Weinstein's victims and has been one of the movements most vocal supporters. Just days after speaking out against Weinstein she was arrested on a felony warrant over a drug charge.

4.<b> Iran <b/>

While many countries in the middle east are busy dealing with Islamic militant groups scrambling for power, Iran has remained a concern for many world powers with its nuclear program pushing ahead at full steam. The country, despite being far more educated than ever before in 2017, still puts people to death for non-violent crimes such as "insulting the Prophet", apostasy, same-sex relations, adultery and drug-related offenses. I'm not going to link any of this garbage but these public executions or cutting off of hands always make their way to liveleak.

<script async src="" charset="utf-8"></script>

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's relationship with America has only strengthened since Trump took office, largely in part to a weapons deal worth $110 billion. President Trump finalized the arms deal on his visit to Saudi Arabia where we also got this beautiful image of the president holding a glowing orb with King Salman that you just know is just taunting conspiracy theorists.

5.<b> California Fires <b/>

Back in America, California has seen some of the most devastating fires in the state's history. The Thomas fire alone burned entire neighborhoods in Ventura and Santa Barbara while in nearby Los Angeles the Skirball Fire raged unchecked. In Santa Rosa and Napa County alone, 7,000 homes were lost and over $1 billion in damage was done.

6.<b> North Korea <b/>

As if we didn't have enough to worry about from natural disasters, North Korea comes in at number six on the list for their ridiculous posturing to show the world they intercontinental weapons are almost to the point of needing to be taken out. Kim Jong-un made sure the whole world knew when he tested his first Hwasong-15 ballistic missile which is theoretically capable of reaching Washington D.C. with a nuclear payload.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">KCTV also broadcast still images that were not part of the KCNA package. A sampling: (1/3) <a href=""></a></p>&mdash; Martyn Williams (@martyn_williams) <a href="">November 30, 2017</a></blockquote>

<script async src="" charset="utf-8"></script>

Why does such a small country need such a big missile?

7. <b> Texas Hurricanes <b/>

Raging fires aren't the only natural disasters to worry about, 2017 held a remarkably bad year for hurricanes with Hurricane Harvey doing nearly as much damage as Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Altogether, Harvey cost $200 billion in damage and claimed 77 lives. Some casualties were the result of flesh-eating bacteria in the floodwaters, while others died in raging floodwaters during the hurricanes worst days.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href=";ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Hurricane</a> Harvey with 85 mph winds as of 7 PM CDT, still expected to become CAT 3 major hurricane before landfall along TX coast early Sat. <a href=""></a></p>&mdash; NHC Atlantic Ops (@NHC_Atlantic) <a href="">August 25, 2017</a></blockquote>

<script async src="" charset="utf-8"></script>

Florida was also hit a short time later by Hurricane Irma costing many lives destroying hundreds of homes. Some casualties of Irma were the result of human negligence such as the nursing home where nine patients lost their lives to what amounts to a lack of care during the storm. The Caribbean was also hit hard by Hurricane Irma where at least 10 were killed and millions and damage were done by the raging storm.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Barbuda was absolutly devastated by Hurricane Irma…. 90% of its structures are destroyed and 60% of the islands population is homeless… <a href=""></a></p>&mdash; Kendall Rae💫 (@KendallRaeOnYT) <a href="">September 7, 2017</a></blockquote>

8. <b> ISIS

One the best things for many people in 2017 would be liberation from Isis. While America is mostly insulated from the effects of the group, many in remote areas were forced to live under the group's version of Shariah Law. The radical, Muslim terrorists lobbed off heads at will and threw gay people off buildings for all the world to see. For what it's worth, all their high-production value, HD videos of their heinous acts only strengthened the world's resolve against the group. The group had taken control of large parts of Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, and even the Philippines where members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front rose to do battle and halted their attempted invasion. In the weeks leading to the close of 2017, ISIS has been all but eradicated, all their territory has been taken back, and anyone who fought with them is either, dead, in jail or soon to be one of the two.

9. <b> Mandalay Bay <b/>

Although this event only lasted a total of 90 minutes, the mass shooting at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada was the worst in modern US history. The gunman, a despondent, high-stakes poker player who allegedly made millions in real estate man named Stephen Paddock, opened fire on the crowd attending the Route 91 country music festival from the 32 floor of the Mandalay Bay. Paddock, 64, used an arsenal of assault weapons modified for increased efficiency to mow down 500 concert-goers killing 58 before turning the gun on himself. The night of terror held not only tragedy but bravery, as well as many bystanders, went out of their way to help shooting victims. The Goldwater was one of the first to report on the leaked images of the deceased shooter but warning, they are graphic.

10.<b> Porn Industry <b/>

2017 was quite an interesting year for the porn industry, sadly it also held a lot of tragedy. The death of a young Japanese porn star who drowned in semen while filming a bukkake scene shook the industry. Another blow to the industry was landed when a successful young adult film star named August Ames, 23, took her own life on December 5, just days after an alleged dispute lead her to vent on Twitter saying that she was being unfairly labeled a homophobe for not wanting to have sex with a gay man. The rising Canadian star performed in over 270 adult films before hanging herself while in the middle of a controversy over cyber-bullying and homophobia. She was found hanging at a public park 20 minutes from her home in Camarillo, California. Ames left a suicide note in her car apologizing for killing herself.
