Massive Blast Rips Through Busy Market in Murcia, Spain

A huge explosion hit a packed market in a Spanish city of Lorca, Murcia earlier this morning that left three people injured.

The explosion was so massive that one of the victims was rushed to hospital with leg injuries after the blast. The area happened to be packed with people at that time, all busy with completing their Christmas shopping.

A local emergency services coordination center confirmed the explosion on social media. The message said: “Explosion in Lorca. Situation totally under control, three people injured.”

The area had to be evacuated. Shattered glass and debris strewn across the floor greeted the emergency responders when they arrived at the scene of the incident. A butcher’s stall can be seen in photos with police tape around it appearing badly damaged.

The authorities are initially reporting that the probable cause of the blast was a gas cylinder exploding just as welding work was taking place nearby.

There are also local media reports that a nurse named Saturnina Martinez happened to be at the scene when the explosion happened and she attended to the most seriously injured person and helped stabilized the victim. The still unidentified woman was then taken out of the area on a stretcher and onto a waiting ambulance.

The other two victims suffered cuts and lacerations to their legs.

While the authorities are still attending to the incident and investigating, it will likely determine the matter as an accident, and will probably rule out any terror angle.
