Pennsylvania Doctor Indicted on 19 Counts in Opioid “Pill Mill” after 3 Million Doses Prescribed

The United States Attorney’s Office has issued indictments against a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Doctor who is now blamed for the overdose deaths of at least five patients.

60-year-old Doctor Raymond Kraynak, who lives in Mount Carmel, prescribed a stunning 3 million narcotic opioid painkillers in just the short period of 19 months, according to Federal Prosecutors.

Dr. Kraynak was indicted on five counts of drug delivery resulting in death, 12 counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and two counts of using his doctor's offices as “drug-involved premises.”

Federal investigators accuse Kraynak of illegally prescribing painkillers to thousands of people from his offices in Shamokin and Mount Carmel.

The United States Attorney calls Kraynak’s office a “pill mill.”

Federal agents say that between this year and last, Kraynak prescribed the most controlled substances of any doctor in Pennsylvania.

Kraynak was one of three doctors in Northumberland County approved to prescribe medical marijuana as well, but the Pennsylvania Department of Health said Kraynak has now been removed from that list.

After being led out of his office in handcuffs, Kraynak posted a cash bond and was free on bail.

He will plead not guilty, his lawyer, public defender Thomas Thornton said to<a href="http://www.mcall.com/news/breaking/mc-nws-pa-doctor-opioid-deaths-20171221-story.html"> The Pennsylvania Morning Call</a>.

“At this point we really haven’t had a chance to see the evidence against him,” his lawyer said. “We’re more concerned about his patients right now.”

The United States Attorney’s Office says that Kraynak prescribed nearly 3 Million total doses of oxycodone, hydrocodone, oxycontin, and fentanyl within 19 months. Those prescriptions were written for approximately 2,838 patients.

“The sheer number of pills prescribed in this case is staggering,” said US attorney David Freed in a statement. “Death or serious injury was the inevitable result of this defendant’s conduct.”
