Breaking: Shots Fired During Hostage Situation Involving Veteran

||| NBC 6 |||

A hostage event unfolded overnight while most were sleeping at a Little Havana apartment that sent one Miami Police officer to the hospital and a military veteran to jail.

The veteran allegedly fired shots at the officers while holding a woman hostage at a Little Havana apartment around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday. The call originated over a loud music complain but once officers arrived shots were fired from inside the apartment and an officer dislocated a shoulder while running for cover.

Public Information Officer Christopher Bess said SWAT teams and a hostage negotiator were called to the scene after police learned another person was inside the apartment. The negotiator was able to get the shooter, described as a military veteran, to release a female that was inside the apartment with him.

The veteran eventually surrendered to police and was arrested. Neighbors say about seven shots were fired before police arrived but officers have not confirmed this. Neither the hostage nor the shooter sustained injuries and the police officer is expected to be okay.
