FBI Narrowing In On Suspects In Border Patrol Agent's Death

Federal search warrants that were unsealed this weekend reveal the FBI is narrowing in on suspects in the death of Border Patrol agent Rogelio Martinez and the beating of a second agent.

The assault occurred near Van Horn in late November when two Border Patrol agents were ambushed and beaten with rocks leaving Martinez dead. The warrants reveal an informant came to federal agents with information that two brothers may have been involved in the murder.

The informant's tip revealed a "coyote" who had recently smuggled illegal aliens across the border said that some of the immigrants bragged about assaulting the agents. Another person who knew the two brothers identified them by name to the informant who then relayed the information to the federal authorities.

Martinez suffered multiple injuries to his head and body that caused massive amounts of blood loss. The second agent experienced severe head injuries as well. The information told the FBI that the brothers could be found in Portales, New Mexico and Odessa, Texas.

The documents also say the agents learned from a third brother and an American woman who admitted to driving to Presidio, Texas to pick up the first suspect the day after the attack occurred. The group took turns driving back to Portales but we're sure to have the woman drive across the Border Patrol checkpoint.

In an interview with the first suspect, he allegedly admitted to crossing the border illegally into the U.S. "sometime before November 20." The woman also confirmed the suspect was speaking on the phone about crossing into the U.S. with a load of methamphetamine and heroin.

Investigators believe the assailants would have been in close proximity with the border agents during the attack and would likely have their DNA on their clothing but did not indicate if any bloody clothing had been recovered from the suspects.

At least one is being charged with illegal Re-entry but no one has been charged for the death of Martinez.
