Law enforcement says that they've apprehended a pedophile who in some sense was living a double life as a child sexual predator and also a seemingly happily-married husband at first glance that also tutored young children at a local library.
47-year-old Matthew Coda, of Melo Park, California was living what appeared to those in the outside; as a completely normal married man.
He and his wife were both planning to adopt a child since they couldn't conceive children in the traditional sense.
Then after the pair decided to formalize the adoption process in hopes of obtaining a child to raise; Matthew Coda was forced to give his wife the truth about his criminal past, for fear that it would hinder their efforts to be accepted as parents.
It turns out, completely unknown to his wife, Coda had once been convicted of Child Pornography charges in his youth in New Jersey.
Despite his pleas to his wife to rationalize his past, after her becoming aware of the shocking information he had kept secret for so many years; she started to notice strange behavior from her husband.
That's when she took matters into her own hands, because the man she had thought she knew and loved was instead a wolf in sheep's clothing the entire time, playing both everyone they knew and their own relationship as a fool.
San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said that's when she reached out to what she called a “techie friend,” who scoured through Coda’s electronic devices and the hard drive on his computer.
Once the friend of the wife began searching, he then located over three-thousand sexually explicit videos and images of adults engaged in deranged pedophilia-laden sexual relations with young children.
Coda’s wife immediately contacted the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, kicked her husband out of their house, and filed for divorce. She alerted authorities in September, triggering a months-long investigation that led to Coda’s arrest Monday night at San Francisco International Airport.
“She didn’t just look around herself and leave it at that,” Wagstaffe said. “She enlisted someone who had real technical skills.”
Wagstaffe went on to praise the wife of Coda, for taking such a stance that must have been difficult for her to proceed with.
Coda was arraigned Tuesday in San Mateo County Superior Court on one felony count of possession of more than 3000 images of child pornography.
He is being held at the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City, California, on $200,000 bail. His next court date is scheduled for December 13th.
Detective Sal Zuno of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said Coda is employed in a “technical field” in Mountain View, a job that does not involve working with children currently.
However, in 2015 he worked via a volunteering position at the Half Moon Bay Library from May to July of 2015, tutoring young children as part of a “reading club program.”
Michelle Durand, a spokeswoman for the San Mateo County Manager’s Office, said in a statement that the library had received no complaints as if yet about Coda during his time as a volunteer. She also pointed to security measures taken for all volunteers.
“All library volunteers must submit an application and be fingerprinted prior to starting their volunteer work,” Durand said in the statement. “Mr. Coda cleared the screening process and volunteered with the Half Moon Bay Library’s reading club program. This program is held in the public area of the library, and volunteers are visually supervised by library staff at all times.”
Zuno said no one has contacted police with reports of inappropriate behavior related to Coda’s work at the library, but that the sheriff’s office is looking into his time there as part of its ongoing investigation, according to<a href="http://www.kiro7.com/news/trending-now/wife-calls-police-after-discovering-husbands-stash-of-child-porn-1/657615782"> KIRO 7</a>.
