Authorities arrested an 81-year-old Cumberland County man on Wednesday related to the shooting death of his 75-year-old wife.
Police officers responded to calls for help on November 22 and proceeded to a home at 8796 Hawkins Road in Linden, North Carolina. They saw Lena Jackson who was then suffering from a gunshot wound. The elderly woman was later pronounced dead.
The husband and suspect in the killing has been identified as Robert Jackson. Authorities said the Jacksons lived together in the said home. The husband was later brought to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center after the shooting incident.
Upon his release from the medical center, Jackson met with authorities. He was charged with first-degree murder in connection with his wife’s death.
It is not clear why he shot his wife, and if the couple engaged in a domestic spat prior to the shooting incident. The authorities have not established the cause of the domestic trouble if there was one before the fatal shooting.
The police did not provide details as well if the Jacksons have children, and if they have been notified of the incident that killed their mother.
Jackson surrendered to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. He was being held without bond Thursday afternoon.
