Police Change Findings From Accident to Homicide on Apex Woman’s Death

Police announced on Friday that the husband of an Apex woman who was shot and killed at her home only a day after Thanksgiving has been charged with murder.

The suspect Michael Anthony Maher, 44, is now detained at the Wake County jail pending a court hearing scheduled Friday afternoon. The resident of 2014 Walden Glade Run was being held without bond.

The authorities initially reported that the suspect’s wife, Nadia Maher, 38, was shot in the abdomen after a gun accidentally discharged in her residence on November 24. She was brought to a local hospital, where she died.

The police eventually decided to take a second look at the case and changed their findings to homicide instead of a mere accident. They did not, however, shared what prompted their decision to review the incident and change their earlier impression of the case.

The authorities also shared that the couple had a history of domestic violence. It was not made clear, however, if husband and wife were engaged in a dispute at the time of the shooting incident, and what the cause could have been of the disagreement or conflict prior to the wife’s killing.

The Mahers have been renting the Walden Glade Run home since August. Neighbors said the couple mostly kept to themselves and didn’t really interact much with them.

The couple has four children, ranging in age from elementary to high school.

One neighbor named Jay Rudinsky feels sorry for the Maher children for such a tragedy to hit their family. He said: “I’ve got two teenage children myself, and it’s just, we’re really sad for the kids. They’re obviously the ones who are impacted the most.”
