Canadian Model Wants Eye Removed After Eye Tattoo Goes Horribly Wrong

A 24-year-old international model from Ottawa, Canada named Catt Gallinger is opting to have her right eye removed after an eye tattoo went horribly wrong.

Gallinger is experiencing blurred and permanently damaged vision and her eye is painfully swollen. On top of that, purple colored tears are coming from the eye due to the botched ink job. She is in so much discomfort at this point she just wants the ink-filled flap of her eye removed.

The eye has already been subject to numerous treatments, all of which have failed to restore vision and stop the pain. Gallinger doesn't have much time because once the ink is solidified the only thing they will be able to do is to remove the eye from her head completely.

In an interview with Global News, Gallinger said, "There have been a lot of times where I’ve thought, if I have to live like this for the rest of my life, I’d rather get [my eye] taken out."

Gallinger shared a defeated Facebook post that revealed how much pain the eye has caused her. "So it’s now uncovered..back to meds and figuring out my appointment next week to hopefully get sedated surgery..This is beyond heartbreaking," the post said.

"I CANNOT open it at all without significant effort. Since I’ve always been honest on here, I will continue to be. My hope is gone. I’m very close to asking for removal.. I’m so tired of it all."

In another Facebook post, Gallinger added, "Sorry I haven’t answered many comments or messages. I’ve been sleeping a lot and just very tired in general. Here’s how my eye is currently, photos as well as a video of it. It’s sore and feels heavy, for lack of a better word, often."

The post continued, "I go through a bottle of artificial tears every two-three days. Still on all the same medications. Appointment on Friday in the early morning to take another look at it and discuss the sedated surgery option."

Gallinger and her botched eye tattoo went viral and the Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (EPSO) started a petition to ban scleral tattoos altogether.

The organization also made this public statement in regards to eye tattoos, "Ophthalmologists around the world are experiencing increasing numbers of patients with blindness and loss of an eye because of the increasing popularity of eyeball tattooing."

EPSO also said, "The risky act of tattooing an eye is being performed by untrained individuals who have no knowledge of the eye’s delicate anatomy. Ocular and periocular injections should only be performed by a licensed medical physician due to the high risks associated with blindness and infections of the eye."

The story of Catt Gallinger and her eye tattoo should be a stark reminder of the consequences for anyone looking to get a tattoo on their eyeball. Hopefully, Miss Gallinger's next surgery is able to salvage her eye and bring back her vision.
